Nintendo 3DS Preview

Today on my way to Tampa, Florida I was walking through the airport when I saw someone with a 3D phone/device; not sure exactly. However what I did notice was that he had these glasses on like he was a Cyclops. I kind of looked at him and thought to myself "I hope he doesn't take them off and let loose". Well on more of a realistic aspect he kind of looked a little ridiculous! Even though the man that had the 3D device looked really tech savvy, the handheld device couldn't compete with what the 3DS has to offer - no glasses. And from what reviews and people that have had/seen/tried it say, the quality is amazing. Nintendo has brought handheld gaming to the next level. The top screen is a 3.53-inch wide screen LCD with 800X240 resolution display, bringing 3D to life without any silly glasses that make you look like the matrix. The lower screen is 3.02-inch touch screen with a 320x240 pixel resolution. The 3DS has not one, not two, but three cameras – one camera in the inner part of the device as well to add on top of the two on the outer part of the device. This lead me to think "could we see another Pokemon snap?" hmmm… that would be pretty cool. The handheld device will only support carts up to two GB max at launch.

As for the 3DS's wireless capabilities, the device can communicate up to 2.4 GHz band and will allow players to connect locally for some serious competitive matchups. The Nintendo 3DS can also connect to LAN access points to surf the web and allow players to enjoy their games with others online. The system's hardware was built and designed to be able to interact with other Nintendo 3DS devices even while in sleep mode or powered (on of course). Also if the 3D device becomes too much for your eyes, on the side of the handheld there's a slider to completely shut off the device's 3D capabilities. Also to save power you can shut off all wireless communication and bring down the brightness. This time Nintendo made a telescoping stylus that's extendable up to 4". For the games, the 3DS takes in new titles that are specifically for the 3DS however it can go old school and play regular DS games. There's an SD memory card slot for music and pictures and it does have a stereo output for headphones. Finally the device will run on a lithium ion battery, however batter life has not been announced. The 3DS hits store sometime next year, spring hopefully, though no specific date has yet to be announced.
