• The Tournament DVD Review

Welcome to 2010 my fellow Epicians!!! I am your friendly neighborhood reporter Epic-1 and I am starting the New Year with a BANG!!!! So let me start this review a little different than usual; The Tournament receives a 5 out of 5 stars and it has been Epic-1 tested and TOV approved!!! Now let me explain why.

The Tournament

The Tournament starts off in Brazil, in some meat factory with Joshua Harlow (Ving Rhames) winning some tournament of some kind. Fast forward 7 years later and we are in England and we see a man drunk and thrown out of a bar. This man is Father Macavey (Robert Carlyle) and he is about to be put into some wild game and he doesn't even know it. We then see Lai Lai Zhen (Kelly Hu) come off a train go to a hotel, take some kind of drug that puts her too sleep, when she wakes up she already has a device implanted in her and she is in the tournament.

The Tournament

Before I continue let me explain how this tournament goes: (1) everyone in the tournament are professionals hired hit men, assassins, killers, and some just plain crazy. (2) They all have these devices planted inside them that we find out later can explode. (3) They only have 24 hours to kill everyone else or the devices explode and kill them all. (4) There are a lot of rich people betting on them. (5) Last and not least it's kill or be killed.

The Tournament

Now that the rules are in play, the killing begins quickly with Lei Lei killing off Steve Tomko (Craig Conway) in a good fight. We then see Anton Bogart (Sebastien Foucan) go into some diner, into the bathroom, removes his device and throw it into some coffee pot where the waitress goes and pours it into a cup and we see Father Macavey drink it. So now Father Macavey is in the tournament but is protected by Lei Lei. We also see the return of the former champ Joshua who is in the tournament for one reason to find the killer of his pregnant wife. Battles go on, blood is spilled, and then we get to the strip bar where we see the cowboy Miles Slade (Ian Somerhalder) and in the bar with him are eight other killers. The shooting begins, everything is crazy, and in this mess enters Joshua. After a few more killings Miles gets the better of Joshua, knocks him out and ties him up. When Joshua awakes he asks Miles why he killed his wife and Miles tells him that he didn't, Lei Lei did. Joshua asks for a drink and when Miles goes to light his cigar Joshua spits it in his face, Miles catches on fire but still finds a way to escape. The movie goes on we see a great bus vs. truck scene in which we see Lei Lei, Father Macavey, Joshua, and Anton go at it. The movie ends to me with a perfect ending for this movie, and let me say that the person who is running the tournament Powers (Liam Cunningham) deserves what he got and that's all that I am gonna say.

The Tournament

The Good

Everything is great!!! This movie is non stop action, it has a great story, twist and turns, and the ending was perfect. Some honorable mentions in the movie as well are John Lynch, Nick Rowntree, Rachel Grant, Scott Adkins, and of course Andy Nyman and Iddo Goldberg. All of them play either assassins or as in the case of Andy and Iddo the tech guys in the movie whose semi-comedy made the whole thing move along.
