Hey gang, Valkor here. And I'm checking in with the final round of season one of the new TMNT series. The gang at Paramount Home placed the first two sets on a single disc with seven episodes each. However, this round they've thrown in the remainder eps on a two disc package. Check it out, it's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Ultimate Showdown DVD.
When we last left the Turtles, they went face to face with their arch nemesis "The Shredder", met his daughter Karai, and went against a host of new mutated baddies. As we delve deeper into the season, the Turtles will not only have to watch their back as Shredder makes his move against them, but also figure out what the Kraang is ultimately up to and what does it all have to do with April O'Neal? It's gonna be crzy fun finding out! Highlights include:
Cockroach Terminator - After Raph tries to squash Donny's roach spy creation, it comes back in mutagen form for some payback. Plus they introduce a new vehicle that looks very familiar, in a Dark Knightish sorta way.
The Pulverizer Returns! – The Turtles look to get some inside info on Shredders latest scheme from an unlikely source.
I, Monster – A classic enemy with a new look, the Rat King makes an appearance and he's gunning for control of NYC and the mind of the Turtle's Ninja Master, Splinter.
Showdown Parts 1 and 2 – This is it! The final confrontation between the Turtles and the Kraang, plus the faceoff we've all been waiting for between Splinter and The Shredder! Secrets are revealed as well as being introduced to Kraang Prime and the Technodrome! Excitement will ensue!
Special features on Ultimate Showdown include four shorts "The Mutation of a Scene" that does a breakdown of four episode and how they're brought to life from storyboard, primary and final (Disc one), Disc two contains three animated comics plus a trailer for the video game. And finally you get a physical Lego Ninja Turtles comic book insert. It's a nice bunch of extras, but the main event is where it's at!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Ultimate Showdown does not disappoint in any regard! The series does an excellent job of sticking with the continuity from the beginning, balancing out the action, and keeping up with the fun. The complexity of the storyline as you delve further in is rather predictable (Karai's origin for one), but that doesn't deter the excitement levels at all or the need to continue watching. What's killer about this new set is that Mikey is on point and his level of disappointment when he doesn't name a new villain will crack you up. The final two episodes – Showdown, you DO NOT want to miss. I know, it's hard not to because they're part of the set, but when it starts just plant yourself down for that hour and enjoy it. It's that awesome! The extras are a nice touch and I'm really digging the comic book (The Lego comic). And if there ever was a Lego game I'd actually wanna play, then it would be one based on TMNT. I was a bit skeptical when Nickelodeon took over the rights of TMNT and when this new series was announced, I was even more hesistant. But now that the first season has completed, I'm glad to see it was a success. It's been a fun and crazy ride and I'm glad I got the chance to enjoy it. Season two of the new series has just begun and I can't wait to see how events play out.
I'm not feeling the Rat King in this new series. I really dug the guy in the original series but this one is even more over the top and less cool than the previous version.
When Newtralizer actually eats one of the Kraang; gross and totally unexpected.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Ultimate Showdown 2 Disc DVD is available now and if you've collected the previous two discs, then you'll definitely want to complete the set with this one. It's fast-paced, loads of action, great comedy, and really ties a lot of loose ends. So out of TOV 5 stars, Ultimate Showdown gets 5 star Perfect!
