Hey folks, Valkor here. And after sitting through two sets of not so great cartoon sets (Wheelie and The Chopper Bunch and Jabberjaw), I'm pleased as pop to welcome back the dynamic duo of Tom and Jerry. Thanks to the folks at Warner Home, we get another DVD set, in line with the likes of the "Greatest Chases" collection. This round we get "Tom and Jerry Fur Flying Adventures Vol. 1" and be prepared... you will LOL.
If you've been a follower of TOV, you'll know that we've just about covered almost all of the T and J collections, and I'm not complaining because I love these guys. They're not repetitious in that every episode it's about Tom chasing or wanting to eat Jerry, and Jerry always winning. Sometimes the two team up, and sometimes Jerry loses. ANd Fur Flying Adventures DVD set proves that point. With this set, we get a single disc containing fourteen classic Tom and Jerry side-splitting shorts. Though not all are funny, it's still Tom and Jerry and their antics cannot be denied. Check out some of these highlights:
The Vanishing Duck – a surprise in the form of Little Quacker is given to the lady of the house, on her birthday. The husband takes wifey out to dinner, leaving Quacker home alone with a bird-hungry Tom. However Quacker discovers a vanishing crème that makes him and Jerry invisible, torturing Tom. But Tom wins in the end when he discovers their little secret.
Hic-Up Pup – Spike is trying to put his pup Tyke down for a nap, but the antics of Tom and Jerry keep waking him up. Worse, Tyke gets the hic-ups when his sleep is disturbed. So Spike gives Tom an ultimatum to not disturb his son's sleep or else. But Tom wants his mouse and he'll let nothing stand in his way.
Pet Peeve – Spike and Tom compete to see who can stay in their comfy home. All they have to do is be the first to catch Jerry. Hilarity will ensue!
Little Quacker – This is one of my favorite shorts! Tom steals the egg, wanting it for an omlet, instead he gets Little Quacker. And since he can't have his breakfast scrambled, he settles on a roast duck dinner. And the chase is on with Jerry playing assist. It gets funnier when Dad Quacker shows up at the end!
No additional extras included, save for a few trailers; among them are one for All-Star Superman and another for a Scooby-Doo live action film (which looks REALLY BAD!!). Other than that, let's move on to the TOV Breakdown!
Fur Flying Adventures is 14 episodes of pure hilarity! Tom and Jerry's never ending cat and mouse antics hardly ever gets old, or even feel dated. Even the younger crowd of today enjoy the raw, no holds barred stylings of T and J - and that blows me away. Because in the face of such cartoons as Spongebob or Dora the Explorer, who would have though Tom and Jerry would find a place in the hearts of today's youths. But color me impressed when I watch as my nieces and nephew break down in tears as they watch Tom and Jerry go at each other, which shows me no matter my favorite cat and mouse will always be appreciated.
The Chuck Jones shorts on the disc – three to be exact, really bring the set down. I'll admit, I've never been a fan of CJ's work when it comes to the cat and mouse team. Sorry, the shorts aren't funny – at all! Next, where is this new set headed – I mean there are different DVD sets out there.
Tom And Jerry Fur Flying Adventures Vol. 1 is available now and it's a definite can't miss for any fan who was ever in love with the cat and mouse duo. Plus newcomers can experience true cartoon slapstick that only these two can portray. Out of TOV 5 stars, I give Fur Flying Adventures 4.5 and it's been Valkor tested, TOV Approved!
