Hey gang, Valkor here. So last week, I took a journey into the unexpected though not entirely unexpected as I was well familiar with the company whom I was visiting. But what I didn't expect was the amount of product on hand entirely unrelated to the company. Huge thanks goes out to 2D-X JayDub for this one, for had it not been for him, I'd have never gotten the chance to meet the most iconic company known across the globe – Zippo. And not only were they showing off their lighters, but a bunch of cool offerings that can be expected in the not too distant future.
If you're unfamiliar with Zippo, and I'd be hard pressed to find someone who didn't at least know the name, they're a company that's more American than the American flag and mom's apple pie, who makes the best damn lighters anywhere. Of course many have tried to imitate the awesomeness of a Zippo, but they can never duplicate the little things that make a Zippo so cool (such as the click sound when you open one up). It's not just a sturdy lighter, but one that can stand some pretty fierce winds and with so many to choose from, you can easily find one to match your style and/or persona. As I walked into the event, I was taken on a little bit of a tour, going through the history of Zippo lighters, their many designs, how it all began and where they're most popular (besides US, China and Japan rank highest in Zippo ownership). There was also a demo on the wind resistance of a Zippo flame and even the Zippo car made an appearance outside of the bar.
But back to the event, which was held at a bar called "Hardings" in NYC, shout out to the staff who were crazy attentive with a bartender that wouldn't quit with the jack and cokes. By the end of the night I was pretty buzzed. But not before getting the buzz on a slew of products from Zippo that were totally non-lighter related and would make a man proud to own em. Check it out.
First up is the Zippo Metal Wallet that's not only sleek and lightweight, but also offers up some extra security. Its steel casing serves a RFID protector for your credit cards and its rubber binder makes it so the wallet can't easily be picked from your pocket.
Next, Zippo looks to break into men's toiletries by offering an assortment of items – Zippo body shampoo, cologne, and lotion. The fragrance the product serves up is soft yet manly and definitely doesn't overpower (still use sparingly).
Back in 1993, Zippo purchased WR Case Cutlery Company, who was also on hand showing off a slew of blades from personal pocket-size, larger more practical sizes, and knives for household use. But I was totally locked in on the TecX, which looks to be the perfect utility knife, with a handle that has an amazing, futuristic sorta techy design.
Finally, we dip back into lights because why not right? Owners of a Zippo have been asking for a more precise flame and it looks like Zippo is about to answer the call with the Blu2 that touts a perfect and more precise butane flame with every strike, packed within a nice compact steel case.
Zippo is looking to take the world by storm with a slew of non-lighter related products coming down the pike, all the while still keeping within the confines of men's lifestyle. I was impressed with the lineup and I can't wait until they meet Val-Cave testing.
