Hey gang, Valkor here. Sweet Suite is one event I don't always attend, but when I do it's usually so much fun. It's just like Toy Fair, but it's a huge party where everyone – young and old – are invited. It's where influencers and members of the press converge to check out the latest in products that you might find under your tree this holiday season. And while there was plenty to see, I kept things “guy-centric” for the TOV community. And while most of the items are mainly for kids, I can see how adults can make use of them too. See if you can guess which ones.
Sugar Rush - my first stop at the event was not only a hands-on experience but a treat for the nose as well. The company debuted their latest product – Cloud Sand; visually, it's pretty impressive as you grab a nice handful of the stuff and watch as it drizzles through your fingers – kind of like sand, but with more of a clay texture. However, Sugar Rush took it to the next level by adding a rich scent to each type of sand – marshmallow, strawberry, cotton candy, and cake batter (my personal favorite). And they really nail it on the scents. I mean, cake batter smells so good, I was almost tempted to eat it. Almost...
Zing - This company had a few items that were not only entertaining but it brings out a child's imagination; first up we have the Zax, which is a foam throwing ax that sticks to just about any surface. I had a difficult time getting my throws to connect, but that's more on my abilities at ax tossing than the actual ax itself. Then there's Klikbot and Stikbot, which will allow your child or just about anyone to create stop-motion animation films, with your only limits is your imagination. It works alongside an app, which will follow along with your progress, frame by frame. You can also add music, voice, and even make use of a green screen to really bring your work of art to life! Finally, we have Zing Pong, which is the kid-friendly version of the adult fan favorite, except the loser, drinks a weird concoction such as the one in the pic below. Now this one looks like a definite blast to play!
Playmobil – When there's something strange, in your neighborhood, who ya gonna call? PLAYMOBIL! That's right, Playmobil is giving you all the Ghostbuster goodness you can handle. There's the Ecto-1A (its first appearance was Ghostbusters 2) as well as figures representing Egon, Peter, Ray, and Winston, which were not only micro but of the 6” variety as well. Then there's the Playmobil Space, which showed off a pretty cool space station. But the Ghostbusters items was where I had my geek moment!
B4 Adventure - Whoever said golf was a dull game has never played mini-golf. Or better yet, they've never played “Cosmic Golf”. As part of the 4Fun lineup, Cosmic Golf takes the idea of mini-golf to a whole new level by bringing it indoors, adding black light, and balls that light up when smacked against the ground or together, for an entertaining experience everyone can enjoy. The setup comes with a mat, illuminating balls, obstacles, and a black light to give it that “cosmic” experience. Hey, if Spider-Man and Deadpool can enjoy the game, then anyone can!
WWE Smash Brawlers - Think Rock 'Em Sock 'Em robots but taken to the next level. And if you don' know what Rock 'Em Sock 'Em is then google is your friend. With the WWE Smash Brawlers, you battle against a buddy with one of two WWE favs such as The Miz, John Cena or AJ Styles until either of your wrestlers is defeated. To win you have to score three hits against your opponent's chest until his character leans forward. You can also twist the controller left or right to perform something of a dodge move. It's pretty cool and lots of fun, plus I hope to see more characters in the future. I mean there's quite a few, but I'd like to see either Hulk Hogan or Sgt. Slaughter!
tori - Other than lunch and recess, arts and crafts were always my favorite period in any given year during my elementary school days. What kid didn't prefer drawing and painting as opposed to math and social studies? Well, there's a new toy experience that blends a child's creativity along with a computer-generated world. And that experience is called tori. On the show floor, I was given the chance to checkout "tori catapult"; first I had to bring in my creation (pic below), scan it into the game, and then proceed to take part in an interactive experience that plays out something like “Angry Birds”, only I'm using an actual toy catapult to perform the action. The “tree” I created became a part of that world's background. But there's so much more to tori than that as there are more games and creations that can be done. So keep an eye out for our full-on a review!
Jakks Pacific - Jakks had the messiest area on the show floor as they were unveiling their Pinata Fiesta lineup. But what truly caught my attention and was definitely TOV worthy was their big boy the X-Power Dozer! This ain't your typical toy bulldozer as this baby comes equipped with the ability to push up to 200 pounds. Plus it's a beast in size; something like a Tonka truck, but with more power to it. Jakks, you could have yourself one of the coolest toys this holiday season!
There was so much more at this year's Sweet Suite and I wish I could cover it all! I definitely should have gotten more pics of the cosplayers, but my favorite is @NYTonyStark (link to his IG, check him out). But I will say this, TOV is not done with Sweet Suite, not by a long shot! We'll have some “sweet” reviews coming up that we think you guys and especially the little guys and gals, will appreciate.
