Hey folks, Valkor here. It’s been awhile since I saw a film that really freaked me out. Most modern horror films, to me, are really weak. But sometimes a decent one makes the rounds and when word reaches my ears that I’ll be in for a good scare, I consider it a challenge and step up to bat. This next film comes from Thailand, it’s been out for about 3 years now (But hey if I ain’t seen it, it’s new to me), it’s the sequel to its first outing “Art of the Devil” and from what I’m told blows the first one away. The film: Art of the Devil 2.

The story revolves around 6 teens who’ve gotten back together after a couple of years of being apart, decide to get back together for a trip. So our 6 teens, Kim, Nut, Por, Go, and Tair set off to meet their friend Ta, who’s father has just passed away. Now here’s the kicker. These 6 were involved in a bit of a scandal 2 years prior that involves voodoo practice, video surveillance, treachery, and sexual assault (though not as graphic as you may be thinking) that literally rocks their world. But when the group arrives at Ta’s house, their past comes back to haunt them.

Ok I’m trying to be as spoiler free as possible because I don’t want to give too much away. However I do highly recommend seeing Art of the Devil 2, should you be able to get your hands on it. It has a “Friday the 13^th” kinda feel to it where you have teens going off to this secluded area and a killer stalking them, it even has a creepy chant. But enough of that, let’s get on with the review.

The Good

The story is a definite plus. I barely even touched on the story from my brief synopsis. Like I said, I wanna remain as spoiler-free as possible. Things do start out kinda slow, and I was ready to bash AOTD 2 just for that, however I see where they were going with it and if you stick with it, you’ll get a great pay off at the end. The acting is pretty good, then again the film is in Thai language so I don’t know what bad Thai acting is like. The gore, when it finally kicks in, is pretty extreme. This is the second biggest reason why you would sit through this film. Think Hostel… what the hell I think Hostel took ideas from this film (Or vise versa). There were moments that I literally hid behind my pillow.

The Bad

Again it has a very slow beginning, but this is more of a nitpick, as I said earlier, everything pays off in the end. And I know this is a Thai film and I’m not sure how nudity works, but yea they needed more boob shots in this. Come on 6 teens, go off to this secluded area, two of which are lesbian loves and we don’t even get one boob? ONE BOOB!?

The Ugly

This isn’t ugly in a bad way because I did mention this film has some crazy ass gore in it, right?

If the first “Art of the Devil” was shit, the producers have redeemed themselves with “Art of the Devil 2”. We’re talking great story, lots of gore, and an ending that on a scale of one to ten ranks 9 in the shock factor. I’m telling you I was floored. I’m gonna take the plunge and get a hold of the first Art of the Devil, but until then out of TOV 5 stars, I’m giving Art of the Devil 2 4 stars easy and definitely suggest you folks out there to give it a go. This film has been Valkor tested and TOV approved.
