Hey gang, Valkor here. The last couple of years, in an attempt to get more event coverage done, I went beyond my usual tech/gaming borders and hung out with the gang over at Zippo (among other companies). It was definitely a unique and very educational experience learning more about the popular lighter company and other items they had in store for their fans. My last meeting with them was back in 2013, now they’ve returned to NYC area once again and I’m glad they sent a TOV an invite because once again they score cool points showcasing somethings old and somethings new.
This time around, the venue was different than the previous bar as I took a journey towards Riverpark: The Cube in NYC, which was quite the trek to get there, but the scenic views was totally worth it. Outside the gang set up a BBQ station that was serving up some delicious quails, prawns and fall-off-the-bone ribs and inside was an abundance of drinks; but I didn’t make such a journey for food and drink – I wanted to see what Zippo had on hand and they didn’t disappoint.
For starters, all around the building and inside on each table were Zippo’s Rugged Lanterns; this baby can take some abuse and still shine bright like a diamond in the sky – and boy does it shine bright. Not overpowering that you can’t look directly into it, but it looks like it’s capable of brightening your darkness nights. Plus it comes equipped with a lithium-ion battery, which makes it perfect for the great outdoors or emergency power outages at home.
Though the weather is starting to warm up around these parts, inevitably “winter is coming”; thankfully Zippo has just the thing to keep the hands of those of us who spend much of our time outdoors (yep I’m including myself because I commute) in the form of a hand warmer gift set. This set includes a hand warmer (that you can get in a variety of designs and colors), carrying pouch and refill fluid. According to the box, this will keep your paws warm for the duration of 6 hours, which works to get you through a frosty commute or a crisp night outdoors.
Speaking of outdoors, there were a host of outdoorsy items on hand such as grills, log carriers, starter logs, as well as grilling tools and an assortment of outdoor-related items meant for those who love spending their time soaking up that open-air freshness as opposed to being cooped up inside.
And what kind of Zippo event would this be without actually checking out some lighters? While we’ve seen the wall of lighters before, on hand were a few new designs that might catch one’s eye. Plus they have a nice outdoor theme to them – gotta love that one with Duck Dynasty, though I’m more drawn to the wolves.
Finally we cannot forget W.R. Case (bought out by Zippo), who were showing off some quality craftsmanship in some of their latest models of pocket knives and cutlery. The Hobo knife was the most interesting since it actually separates to become a full spoon/knife/fork set. And there was the Harley-Davidson collection, which offered up a variety of blades from tactical to practical and everything in between.
More power to Zippo for wanting to branch out into new areas; and what was showcased at this event proves they can make it beyond just lighters. With a hefty assortment of outdoor good, there’s no question Zippo is choice amongst quality hardware. Enjoy these additional pics and we’ll have more from Zippo in the coming months.
